Create a Capsule Wardrobe with Rosie Bee’s Kids’ Clothes

Moms of little ones are always looking to simplify their lives, and any life hacks focused on making daily routines a little easier are most welcome. Cue the capsule wardrobe – one of the best inventions since sliced bread. Basically, a capsule wardrobe is a careful selection of quality kids’ clothes that are simple to mix and match.

Creating a capsule wardrobe for babies and toddlers is a savvy way of organizing and saving money. And all you have to do is go online and browse our Rosie Bee made-for-whimsical-play fashion for the cutest and most adorable handmade-with-love mix-and-match outfits for your little ones.

We believe childhood is all about creative play and imagination in comfortable clothing – no matter what the season.

Capsule Wardrobe Hack #1 – Quality Fabrics

Doing the best for baby and toddler includes the fabrics you choose to dress them in.

This is an important consideration for a capsule wardrobe – as you are generally buying fewer clothing items that will last longer.

Child-friendly fabrics should always be comfortable, durable and perfect for playtime, any time of the year. Speaking of play...what little boy wouldn’t want to be seen playing in our soft and cosy sweater with a handpainted quirky giraffe print and triangle neckline detail?

For little girls, the chestnut floral blouse or dress is a timeless heirloom piece, and for the perfect twirl, we have the vintage Emily dress – so easy to mix and match with leggings and a short- or long-sleeved top.

We have even gone a step further with our limited edition seasonal prints by local artists. “Into the bushveld” is our Autumn ‘21 range in collaboration with artist, Libby Bell, featuring a selection of indigenous South African grasses. The tones are soft and delicate with a touch of whimsy – perfect for childhood.

Capsule Wardrobe Hack #2 – Mix & Match

Mixing and matching prints and plains is where a capsule wardrobe comes into its own – simplifying shopping for kids’ clothes and dressing your littlies – especially when you have a strong-willed toddler determined to dress themselves. No matter what they pull out of the cupboard, the outfit will work, minimizing 2-year old temper tantrums.

Mix our Autumn ‘21 Harvest long-sleeved t-shirt or Chestnut floral Holly blouse with either matching Harvest print leggings or plain blush pocket leggings or Marigold bow leggings for little girls. The final touch is a matching knotted headband.

Capsule Wardrobe Hack #3 – Double Duty

If you have invested in quality comfortable kids’ clothes for your capsule wardrobe, life gets even simpler as the sun starts to set. Depending on the day’s activities, most of our Rosie Bee outfits can transition quite comfortably from daywear to sleepwear when necessary, or vice versa. All our babygrows and pyjamas are soft, warm and comfy. Why wouldn’t you wear such fun and fashionable gorgeousness during the day as well?

Rosie Bee's Baby Clothes

Rosie Bee’s Baby Clothes – Little Feet and Autumn Leaves

“Leaves are falling and autumn is calling.”  As the crisp coolness of the early morning air creeps in, summer clothes start getting packed away and your baby or toddler’s seasonal wardrobe starts to change to accommodate the cooler weather. Rosie Bee’s designer baby clothes are the ideal seasonal addition to your little one’s ensemble.

As autumn fun beckons, keeping toddlers warm and comfortable as they rush out to play and crunch the leaves, and keeping tiny babies warm and snug, remains a priority.

At Rosie Bee, our belief is that childhood is all about fun, imagination and a bit of whimsy thrown in the mix – no matter what the season – and that is reflected in all our baby and toddler clothing ranges.

Little shoes

Toddlers love to run and play outdoors, and our mild South African autumn has much allure to keep them exploring all day long. And so little shoes are a must-have to keep little feet cosy and comfy. Rosie Bee’s baby clothing range has recently added our specially designed soft-soled shoe range to our online boutique.

Rosie Bee's Baby Clothes

These little shoes are not only practical and comfortable, they are utterly adorable. (Please see our sizing chart). Each pair has a leather sole, and the outers and inners are 100 % cotton. A little inspiration

We have a little inspiration that makes our baby and toddler soft-soled shoes extra special. 10 % of each pair sold will go to STEPS whose mission is to improve the lives of children born with club foot” by helping children get the treatment they need,

At Rosie Bee we have even gone a step further. If you have a little one with a club foot, each foot may be a different size, so you are able to order two different sizes in one set. (Just let us know in the NOTES section at checkout.)

Flat Lay photography – tips and tricks I’ve mastered over the years

Start where you are, use what you can, do what you can. – Arthur Ashe

We all start out somewhere, with an idea, a hope, a dream, and it is important to know that, however small that idea or dream is – it is worth pursuing.

I started my baby and toddler clothing business officially in March of 2017, but during 2016 I did a whole lot of dreaming, researching and planning.

When I started out I had no idea how to take proper photos of our clothing, so I enlisted the help of a friend who is a photographer and she took some images for me and edited them to have a bright crisp white background. I soon realised that because the nature of my business lies in different ranges that come out often – I needed to teach myself to take good quality photos of our range of baby and toddler clothing and swaddle sets.

Armed only with my Iphone, I did a lot of research into how to take better flat lays. I also experimented with many different styles until I found my own style – something that is true to me and to my brand – Rosie Bee.

Here are a few tips and tricks I have learnt over the years. I am not a photographer but I just enjoy taking photos of our products and something that used to terrify me has now become one of the most loved parts of my job.

A few key points to consider when taking flat lay photos – I am not going to get technical here because a lot of the technical things with regards to flat lay photos honestly just confuses me. I take photos by look and feel, I have a keen eye for detail and I honestly just use my own instinct and preferences.

  1. If you can invest in a short course on flat lay photography (skill share have many lovely ones) then I encourage you to do so. I actually attended a course on taking better flat lay photos with my iphone at a local business a few years ago. I am sure if you search around you may find a lovely local company offering courses on this subject.
  2. Find your own style, try not to copy others, use your own creativity to build something that is true to yourself and your brand.
  3. You can use pinterest for inspiration but I really do feel that pinterest should be used with caution. Draw inspiration from it only and create your own unique look. For me it has always been about using nature (flowers, leaves, botanical elements, wood etc…) in my flat lays.
  4. Invest in some local props if you would like to. There are some wonderful companies that sell decor items that are perfect for flat lay photography. Think wooden blocks, ribbon, wooden toys, laser cut decor items, fiber crafted items, ceramic dishes, pendants etc.. there are so many lovely local brands to support.
  5. Look around your home for props you can use. You will be surprised at how many items you can find at home that are perfect for flat lays! That little wicker basket you have your fruit in – score perfect for a flat lay! If you are a lifestyle brand or instagramer  – grab your jewelry box and get creative with some classic pieces. Use part of a pretty throw you have to create texture in your flat lay, a bit of string and a pretty pair of scissors will add interest to your photo. So many treasures lie in your home that you could use, just take a moment to have a look around and think out of the box.
  6. You can buy a flat lay board or you can go to a hardware shop and get a thin piece of board and paint it white or any other colour you would like. There are lots of options to use here. Do you have pretty wooden flooring or laminate/vinyl flooring in your home? If yes then you can definitely use that as a background for your flat lays.
  7. Always take your photos next to a large window or somewhere that gets lovey natural light. Watch how the light moves in the room a day before you want to take photos so that you can know the best time for your photo session.
  8. If you are using your phone, make sure your lens is clean and free of smudges. Also learn how to lock the focus of the lens and make sure your hands are steady when snapping that photo.
  9. Make sure you stand up high when taking the photo, many people stand on a little step, I just stand up straight and take the photo directly above the area. You can alter the brightness of the photo once you have locked the focus on the object you are taking the photo of. I do not do this anymore as I prefer to edit the photo afterwards.
  10. I make use of lightroom to edit my photos on my phone, another great app is VSCO. But I prefer lightroom because you can make your own presets in it, which really speeds up the editing process.

Most importantly, have fun! Take breaks when you need to and if you feel frustrated step away for a bit and try again later or even the next day again. Keep practicing it really helps to build up your confidence.

I hope these little tips can help you.

Laura

Baby showers are a wonderful occasion to spoil moms-to-be and celebrate the wonder, joy and anticipation of the imminent arrival of a newborn. It is all about community support.

Our Rosie Bee gift boxes are a perfect baby shower solution – for girls or boys. Each beautifully curated gift box contains a babygrow with matching leggings and a set of 22 milestone stickers (in English or Afrikaans). The basic newborn gift box can be upscaled to the Deluxe box (which includes a matching swaddle blanket) or the Luxury box (which also includes a matching newborn beanie and little slippers).

Kids’ Clothes Online – Let Them Play!

Summer is calling children to play and explore the great outdoors. Childhood memories should be filled with splashing in mud puddles, climbing trees, catching tadpoles and chasing butterflies. That also means that a summer wardrobe needs to encourage these summer activities. But the last thing you want to do is interrupt playtime. So, our online kids’ summer clothes are the best way to keep your little ones dressed and ready for summer adventures.

Childhood playtime adventures should involve exploring, imagining and dancing outdoors. Integral to each of these experiences is our delightful online kids summer collection that will enable them to run, jump and climb – all the while staying cool and comfortable.

Let them explore

“No matter how old you get, may you always stop to fill your pockets with smooth stones, empty snail shells and other little treasures.” -Nicolette Sowder

Exploring is all about kids immersing themselves in the wonder of nature and collecting things. Our summer range of kids’ online clothes – for boys and girls – will keep them happily playing outdoors and satisfying their curiosity for hours.

Let them imagine

“I really love being human. But some days I really wish I could be a fairy.” -Greta, age 4

Imagination and childhood go hand in hand, and as you watch little ones playing, you realise that their world is not restricted to only what they can see. It is hard not to be captivated by their contagious sense of wonder and living in a world of imagined stories and characters. Our summer collection of kids’ clothes online becomes the perfect ‘dress-up box’ of outfits for dragon-slayers, fairies, kings and princesses.

Baby Clothes Online – ‘Snug as a Bug in a Rug’

From the very first scan to the initial in-utero flutterings, a mom-to-be cannot wait to hold and cherish her tiny little bundle. But throughout her pregnancy, there is one thing that cannot be helped; one distraction that keeps her busy: shopping for baby clothes online or instore, accompanied by ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs.’

This modern convenience of shopping for baby clothes online is a far cry from a generation ago. But it does provide parents of today with unique choice and quality. And that is exactly what mom needs and exactly what baby deserves.

Handcrafted stories from yesterday…

Traditionally – in the good ol’ days – a mother-in-waiting would hand sew and knit a ‘layette’ during her pregnancy; the basic set of baby clothes her little one would need. Even though times have changed, there is still something wistful about that picture of yesteryear which is in stark contrast to today’s world of modern mass-produced kiddies clothing. The concept of ‘slow fashion’ for littlies, where each handmade item of clothing would have been handcrafted and stitched together slowly, adds a special sense of love and story.

Handcrafted stories for today…

At Rosie Bee, we have taken the idea of slow, ‘handmade-with-love’ baby clothes and redefined children’s fashion for our 21st-century lifestyle without compromising the personalised element.

Each item of our online baby clothing is carefully handsewn from the softest, breathable fabric, with original nostalgic designs. Our limited edition ranges are made to order to ensure the best quality.

Lullabies and sweet dreams can also be ordered online for tiny ones with our cosy pyjama sets with button or pattern detailing. And go ahead and spoil your baby with our sweetest babygrows that are cute and comfy – all night long.

Handcrafted stories for tomorrow…

The beauty of purchasing Rosie Bee baby clothes online is not only our attention to detail in each little outfit and garment, but our excellent quality fabrics, which will last and last. They can even be kept for baby # 2 or #3, or put aside in a memory trunk for the next generation to discover.

Our original soft, stretchy and gentle swaddle sets, in charming botanicals, allow you to indulge your newborn’s littleness before they are no longer little – keeping them as ‘snug as a bug in a rug.’ These special cocooned moments need to be captured on camera. To complement your nursery’s decor, add an element of whimsy with our fitted cot sheets and change mat covers.

All our toddler and children’s clothes allow your baby to grow with Rosie Bee’s designs, providing nostalgically handcrafted clothing for many tomorrows. Children's online clothing store

Children’s Online Clothing Store: Rosie Bee’s Homegrown Story

Every brand begins with a story – the behind-the-scenes inspiration – that slowly takes on a life of its own until it becomes a reality. C.S.Lewis, who invited us behind the wardrobe to the wonderful, imaginary world of Narnia, said: ‘A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.’ And that is where Rosie Bee’s homegrown story begins: a children’s online clothing store that takes us beyond the wardrobe to a small South African farm that will capture the imagination of children and adults alike.

Rosie Bee children’s online clothing store is a business full of love and heart – made for whimsical play – making this a brand that is more than just beautifully handcrafted clothing with a delightful nostalgic vibe.

So just imagine you are sitting on Granny’s porch, watching the children play and explore – and enjoy the story…

Every story starts with an idea

The Rosie Bee brand is no exception. So what was the idea that gave birth to a children’s online clothing store? Well actually, it was a birth story – a tiny baby girl, an overwhelmed new mom and many sleepless nights filled with online shopping for pretty baby clothes. (The unlikely, but perfect plot ingredients for the emergence of a creative vision!)

This is how Laura, founder of Rosie Bee, tells it in her own words: ‘I was in limbo – trying to find me again. I realised that I needed to become a new version of my old self. The one thing that sparked this transition was my need for creativity. And Emily fueled this creativity. I Iove supporting local, but when Emily was tiny I couldn’t quite find what I was looking for. So the idea of Rosie Bee was formed in my head.’

Every story has a name

The name ‘Rosie Bee’ came out of a conversation between Laura and her gran  – a no-nonsense person with honest, unfiltered opinions. (She didn’t like any of the original name options on the list). Laura knew that ‘rose’ had to somehow be in the brand title as it was her gran’s favourite flower. As they got sidetracked, talking about flowers and gardening, a random memory of a cousin’s childhood doll, called ‘Rosebee,’ popped into the conversation, and from there ‘Rosie Bee’ was born. (Granny approved!)

Every story has a setting

The varied landscape of the Limpopo province – with its dramatic mountain ranges, misty views and hazy sunsets – is the perfect setting for a family farm and the home of Rosie Bee children’s online clothing brand. Laura’s grandparent’s farm – combined with her background as a botanist – creates the perfect backdrop for her studio where her handcrafted kiddies’ clothing range of unique flora- and nature-inspired prints comes to life.

Children's online clothing store

Every story has characters

For Rosie Bee, two of the main characters – behind the scenes – are Baptiste and Kenneth.

Baptiste, originally employed as a packer for Laura’s mother’s ceramic business on the farm, had been taught to sew by Laura’s gran and aunt. When asked to make a dress from leftover fabric for Laura’s baby girl, Baptiste made the perfect little dress, without a pattern. His creative flair and quality sewing skills have blossomed into Rosie Bee’s fun baby and children’s’ online clothing range. The current Autumn Rose print is his favourite design.

Kenneth’s background was sewing adult clothing and children’s school clothing, so he is enjoying extending his repertoire to include Rosie Bee’s baby and children’s clothes. His favourite is the rainbow print and he loves sewing the leggings/bottoms range for little girls and boys.

And then, of course, we have Rosie Bee’s ‘illustrator’, a talented artist from Cape Town who brings the nostalgic-inspired patterns, botanical prints and whimsical designs to life.

Rosie Bee

The Rosie Bee brand philosophy is simple: beautiful, comfortable, fun and excellent quality baby and children’s clothing with love sewn into the stitches of each handcrafted garment.

If you are passionate about locally made quality handmade-with-love’ children’s clothing, then head on over to Rosie Bee’s online store and immerse yourself in the brand and the story, and fill your online cart with fashionable prettiness for your little ones.

If you are looking for a gift, and cannot choose, then spoil a new mom with a Rosie Bee gift card.

Where it all started

I became a Mommy for the first time on the 10th September 2015 to my beautiful little girl Emily. I had it all planned out in my head (I’m a bit of a control freak), how her birth would go, what type of mom I’d be and so forth. I planned, prepared her nursery and read a certain baby book – because I’m a researcher at heart. I had it all figured out, I was in control and ready to meet the little baby we had been praying for.

Well to say nothing went to plan is a bit of an understatement. Emily’s birth plan went out the window when we ended up having an emergency c-section due to a placenta abruption which happened in the hospital as I was being accessed for induction. By the grace of God we were where we needed to be and a very scary situation was avoided.

But… I was not mentally prepared for this surgery. I was in the recovery room for an hour, an hour that I was separated from my little girl, and the thought running through my mind was ‘this is not how it’s supposed to have happened’.

Fast forward a few weeks and I was in a very anxious space, completely out of my depth with a little newborn who didn’t sleep like the book I had read said she would. I regret reading that book immensely. Because later (after listening to my own mom) I realised – babies don’t read books, they don’t all react to this new and scary life in the same way and they all have different personalities. So why on earth would they all sleep a certain amount of time a day and do things in an orderly fashion?!

My beautiful Emily Iris (named after my beloved Granny), came into this world bright eyed and bushy tailed. She was alert, awake and ready for life. And after the initial shock of realising I didn’t have a sleepy newborn wore off, we settled into our own routine. The love I felt for this perfect little girl was indescribable. And once I relaxed more and went with the flow,  everything just fell into place.

I loved being a mommy, I loved my daughter with an intensity that actually scared me, but I also was in limbo a bit – trying to find me again. I realised I needed to become a new version of my old self. The one thing that sparked this transition was my need for creativity. And Emily fueled this creativity, through her energetic and vibrant nature, I learned to enjoy the small things in life again.

As a breastfeeding mom, with a baby who would only sleep in my arms, I was often glued to my bed or couch. This ignited a love/hate relationship with….online shopping. I love it, my credit card though – not so much. Showeee I fell deep into the hole of ‘adding to cart’, and I started searching for beautiful clothes for Emily online. I love supporting local, I still to this day buy clothing from other local clothing brands. But when Emily was tiny I couldn’t quite find what I was looking for. I also remember buying her first birthday outfit and being bitterly disappointed when it came apart after one wash.

So the idea of Rosie Bee was formed in my head. My mother runs a successful ceramics business on our farm, one of her employees, a gentleman named Baptiste was taught how to sew by my Granny and my Aunt Gillian. He was in charge of packing up orders at that stage and I just thought he is so creative, let’s try make a few clothing items and see what happens. I took a little dress of Emily’s to him one day and asked him if he could try sew one for me using an old piece of fabric. He made the dress, without a pattern so perfectly that I decided to give this idea of mine a chance.

This is the first little dress that we made.

I was so scared of launching this business, it was actually my mom, gran and my husband that gave me the push to set up an instagram and facebook account. I had all the first pieces made and photographed I just needed that push to actually launch it. And so Rosie Bee was born – the creativity that has come from this small business has helped me rediscover myself. Emily was the motivation and inspiration behind all of this and I thank God everyday for this beautiful, spunky little girl that he has gifted us with.

I hope to, through this blog, give you a look into the heart of Rosie Bee, to show you snippets from our life on our beautiful farm and to allow you to get to known the makers behind my small clothing brand.

Laura
